This article/essay I wrote for a competition and the title is:

My Dreams For the New Millennium

    Can you imagine the Earth as a barren wasteland without a sign of happiness & life? Have you ever wondered where we will be by the end of the coming millennium? Whenever I think about it, a sad picture immerges in front of my eyes. Look where we were at the beginning of the past millennium and where we are now. You might say that we have gained a lot and were able to invent things that people at that time thought were impossible, but look how much we have lost. We lost more than 80% of the vital natural resources forming the basic support system of life on the Earth. We could build all these great things again but, Can we build back Earth after we destroy it?

    My first dream for the next millennium will be to restore the fabulous environment and extremely supportive natural balance we inherited at the turn of the current century. For almost the whole century we exploited Mother Nature ruthlessly, taking it’s generosity for granted. Nature has provided us with a beautiful environment filled with trees, rivers, mountains, animals, and much more, but look how we are repaying it by killing and destroying these wonderful things. Nowadays you hear about so many animals becoming extinct. Over the century Humans have turned into bigger consumers than producers of natural resources. The scientists estimate that there is a rise in global warming of about 5 degrees. Don’t we want the coming generations to experience and enjoy the beauty of nature in the way we have? Hopefully people will come back to their senses and preserve the priceless gifts of nature in the coming millennium. All these thoughts seem very scary, don’t they? They will come true, if we don’t start before it’s too late. We saw the most of environmental erosion taking place in the 20^th century, now I dream that next millennium will be remembered for ecology restoration.

    Unfortunately, many wars were fought in this century. As long as this hatred continues to spread around the world, mankind will never be able to become blemish free. There is so much poverty, sadness and pain around the world, I wish all this would change in the coming millennium and I often dream that this world would be a happy, friendly place.

    I also wish that some of the new technological developments, which can endanger our civilization, should be stopped. Researches like genetic engineering will change the whole process of creation and destruction of life. The value and dignity attached to a human life will be totally lost, once we are able to produce people to our desired specifications in a factory. The natural system of life should be left undisturbed and thus advancements in this direction should immediately be stopped. I often dream that the technology should be used to make our life still easier and bringing people close to each other. Better communication, tele-presence, and probably a multipurpose privately owned vehicle that can travel on land, water, air or in the space in next millennium will help us in building a strong social life. Technology should be used for removing the day-to-day drudgery of human life, it should be a mean to provide resources needed by every human being for their pursuit of creativity and excellence.

    My greatest dream for this millennium is to be able to help out in accomplishing these dreams. I want to write articles, speak to people and convey my message of how we need to conserve and improve the Earth for a better quality of life. I want to be someone who will always be remembered for doing something great for our planet Earth. After all, we exist only if we stop meddling with nature. We have to save this planet & make it a heavenly place to live. I wish all my dreams would come true within my life time during next millennium.
